Running Stones and UTMB Index: How Qualifying Actually Works

What Running Stones are, how they differ from the UTMB Index and ITRA scores, and how to estimate whether a race result moves you toward UTMB week qualifying.

UTMB week entry is not “run a long race and hope.” It runs on two parallel systems that runners constantly confuse: Running Stones (entry currency for UTMB World Series finals) and the UTMB Index (a performance score). ITRA has its own performance index. They are related in spirit and unrelated in the fine print.

TrailMath is not affiliated with UTMB or ITRA. Official stones, index values, and lottery rules live on utmb.world and itra.run - always confirm there before you plan a season around a number.

Running Stones in one paragraph

Running Stones are points awarded for finishing designated UTMB World Series races. You collect them across a rolling window to meet the minimum required for a given final (UTMB, CCC, OCC, TDS, and others). More stones generally improve your lottery position; exact thresholds and validity windows change by season and race.

If your question is “does this finish help me enter Chamonix?”, you are asking about stones, not about how fast you were relative to the field.

Stones decide whether you get to line up; the index only describes how you ran once you did.

UTMB Index vs ITRA score

The UTMB Index (and the older ITRA performance index language runners still use) rates how strong a result was on a 0-1000 style scale given the course difficulty and your time. A strong CCC can raise your index even if it awards fewer stones than a longer Series race.

Use cases:

GoalWhat to optimise
Lottery / entry eligibilityRunning Stones from designated races
Seeding, ego, comparing yearsIndex / performance score
Picking a training A-raceBoth - stones for access, index for proof of form

Estimate effort and index before you travel

Before you spend a weekend and a flight on a qualifier, sanity-check the course:

  1. Compute km-effort and an indicative stone tier with the race effort estimator - useful for comparing “how hard is this race?” not as an official stone count.
  2. Estimate the performance-index range a finish might produce with the ITRA index calculator.
  3. Cross-check the race on the official Series calendar to confirm it actually awards stones for the year you care about.

A practical qualifying season

  • Map the minimum stones for your target final early - then work backwards to 1-3 Series races you can finish healthy.
  • Do not chase index at the expense of stones if entry is the bottleneck; a conservative finish that awards stones beats a heroic DNF.
  • Protect recovery between stone races. Back-to-back 100K efforts look good on paper and wreck the block that was supposed to peak for Chamonix.
  • Pair stone hunting with real course prep for UTMB or CCC - elevation and night running matter more than the badge on the result.

Stones get you to the start line. Fitness, kit, and pacing get you to the finish. Train for both.
