The ITRA Performance Index and the UTMB Index are 0-1000 scores computed from your race results with proprietary formulas. You cannot calculate your exact official score yourself, but you can look it up for free at itra.run and utmb.world - and this estimator gives a calibrated range for what a given result is roughly worth.
ITRA score and UTMB Index - what they are
The ITRA Performance Index is the International Trail Running Association's 0-1000 rating of trail runners. Every result you record in an ITRA-evaluated race receives a score; your index is a weighted mean of up to your 5 best scores over the past 36 months, with recent and better performances weighted more. Results keep full value for 12 months, then progressively fade until they stop counting at 36 months. There is a general index and one per distance category.
The UTMB Index works the same way for UTMB World Series racing: a 0-1000 score per finished result, a weighted average of up to your 5 best over 36 months, and separate indexes for the 20K, 50K, 100K and 100M categories (assigned by km-effort). It needs at least one race in the past 24 months to stay valid, recalculates daily, and races under 20 km-effort are not scored at all.
The two systems usually land close to each other for the same runner, but they are computed independently, from different race databases, with different proprietary formulas - so do not expect the numbers to match exactly.
How to check your official ITRA score or UTMB Index
Your official scores already exist if you have finished evaluated races - you just have to look them up, for free:

How this estimator works
The estimator uses ITRA's public course-effort concept: km-effort = distance + elevation gain / 100. A 50 km race with 3,100 m of climbing is an 81 km-effort course. From your finish time it computes a flat-equivalent speed (km-effort per hour), then maps that speed to a 0-1000 score.
- Calibration pairs: the score curve is calibrated on 24 public result-to-index pairs read from public utmb.world athlete profiles in July 2026 - from back-of-pack (index ~360) to Jim Walmsley, Kilian Jornet, and Tom Evans (940+).
- Holdout accuracy: the calibration held up on reserved test anchors to within about 25 points, which is why the output is a range, not a number.
- What the model cannot see: field strength, altitude, heat, terrain technicality, and how ITRA or UTMB actually scored the race - Hardrock finishers, for example, earn more than their raw speed suggests.
- 20K races: races under 50 km-effort (the 20K category) are not estimated because we could not source enough public calibration data for them. This site is not affiliated with ITRA or the UTMB Group; every number here is an estimate.

How is the ITRA performance index calculated?
ITRA scores each of your race results against the course and field, then computes your Performance Index as a weighted mean of up to your 5 best scores over the past 36 months - recent and better results count more, and results older than 12 months progressively lose weight until they drop out at 36 months. The exact per-race scoring formula is proprietary, which is why any calculator outside itra.run can only estimate it. There is a general index (all races above 20K) plus an index per distance category.
What is a good ITRA score?
On the 0-1000 scale, ITRA describes roughly 300-500 as a typical recreational trail runner, 500-650 as a strong regional or national age-group level, 700+ as competitive sub-elite, and 825+ (men) or 700+ (women) as international elite. World-class ultrarunners sit above 850-900. Treat these as broad bands: the index compares runners worldwide, so mid-pack at a competitive ultra is a perfectly good score.
What is the difference between the ITRA index and the UTMB Index?
They are two separate systems that work the same way: both are 0-1000, both score each finished result, and both average up to your 5 best scores over a rolling window with more weight on recent, better results. The UTMB Index uses four race categories (20K, 50K, 100K, 100M) and requires at least one race in the past 24 months to stay valid, with results from the past 36 months counting; the ITRA index uses its own distance categories and the same 36-month window. Your two scores are usually similar but not identical, because each organisation scores races with its own data and formula.
How do I check my official ITRA or UTMB score?
Both lookups are free. For your ITRA Performance Index, use the runner search at itra.run (Runners - Find a runner). For your UTMB Index, use the runner search at utmb.world or open your runner profile if you have raced a UTMB World Series event. This estimator deliberately links to both - it never replaces the official lookup.
How long do results count toward my index?
For the UTMB Index, results from the past 36 months count, with full value in the first 12 months and progressively less weight after that; you also need at least one race in the past 24 months for your index to remain valid. The ITRA index uses the same 36-month rolling window with the same 12-month full-value rule. In both systems your index slowly decreases as results age, even if you do not race.
